“At least eight people a day are killed in distracted driving crashes. Distracted driving isn’t just risky for you, it can be deadly for every nearby driver, pedestrian, bicyclist and worker. Join us in observing Distracted Driving Awareness Month and help everyone get home safe.”1 The National Safety Council is kicking off the #justdrive social campaign; share your stories and educate yourself with resources listed below.
Since the Covid-19 pandemic is over, people are getting back to their normal routines; but there remains some lingering “side effects” and new developments that plague the insurance industry. During covid, it was reported that accident rates were up in 2021 despite the fact that there were less people driving! In fact, traffic fatalities rose 18.4% during the first half of 2021 from the first half of 2022. Also, fatalities at that time were the highest since 2006.2
With the most cars on the road since 2020, it seems that some people have forgotten how to drive! Reckless driving and increased speeds both lead to more accidents. When you combine this behavior with distracted driving from things like texting or eating while driving, accident rates rise even more. Not only does this cause death and injury, but more claims push up the price of premiums. It is very important to look out for reckless drivers and make sure you aren’t contributing to the problem and hopefully do not cause another spike in accidents or fatalities.
The good news is that you can help prevent distracted driving! Here are three simple steps:
-
Visual: Keep your eyes on the road
-
Manual: keep your hands on the wheel
-
Cognitive: keep your mind focused on driving3
