REAL ID: Is it Really Coming & Is It Really Required?

It seems like we’ve been hearing about the necessity of having REAL ID for years. It also seems as though the federal government keeps pushing back the date of when it will actually be required for you to travel by plane within the United States. So, what’s the deal? Is REAL ID coming? If so, when? And, do drivers in Northumberland, Selinsgrove, Lewisburg, Milton, Danville actually need it? Insurance Freedom Associates has the answers.
 
What is REAL ID?
REAL ID is a security enhanced identification card that was developed in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001. The REAL ID Act of 2005 established a federal standard for issuing driver’s licenses and identification cards.
 
How Do I Know if I Already Have REAL ID?
If your Pennsylvania driver’s license has a star in the upper right corner you have a REAL ID.
 
Do I Need REAL ID to be Able to Legally Drive?
No. Your standard Pennsylvania driver’s license still allows you to drive, rent a vehicle and purchase alcohol.
 
How Do I Get a REAL ID?
You can get a REAL ID by visiting your local Pennsylvania DMV. You will also need to provide legal documentation with:

• Proof of identity and lawful status (examples: birth certificate, valid passport, etc.)
• Date of birth
• Social security number (social security card)
• Proof of Pennsylvania residency (current valid PA driver’s license, PA vehicle registration card, auto insurance card, W-2 form, computer generated utility bill showing your name and address, etc.)

What is the Current REAL ID Deadline?
As of now, beginning October 21, 2021, a REAL ID driver’s license will be required for Americans who want to travel on commercial airlines within the United States.
 
Is REAL ID Only Required for Airline Travel?
While REAL ID will most often be used for domestic airline travel, REAL ID will also be required to enter certain federal facilities and enter nuclear power plants.
 
Will I Still Be Able to Travel by Plane if I Don’t Have REAL ID?
Yes, if you have a U.S. Passport or U.S. Passport Card. As long as you have one of those documents there’s no reason to be concerned if your current Pennsylvania driver’s license does not expire before October 21, 20121. Also, to travel internationally, REAL ID does not replace a U.S. Passport.
 
Do Children Need to Have REAL ID?
REAL ID is not required for children under 18 years of age.
